Dear Barbara,

Great strides are being made in ARM processor capabilities.  We will have to wait and see to what extent Apple uses ARM technology in its Mac PC's to find out how effectively Apple can use this technology to boost its supply chain strategy.

Thanks for your comments.

Dear t.alex,

Developing software to run on ARM processors will be a challenge, but that challenge is not insurmountable. This effort will really depend on how much Apple believes it will benefit from a shift to ARM processors for their Mac personal computers. If the company thinks such a shift will put them in a better position to compete against other PC users, then they'll go the extra mile to develop software that runs on ARM processors.

Thanks for your comments.

Dear Flyingscot,

I agree with you that it will take several years to transition to an ARM processor that will compete with the Intel x86 architecture, but Apple does have the money and is building the talent to explore this possibility. Furthermore, Apple likes to have greater control over its technological ecosystem. Obviously, Intel will improve upon its chips during this period, but Apple may develop a chip that satisfies many of its Mac PC customers, and that will make them less dependent on Intel.  We will see.

Thanks for your comments.

Nicole

ARM shareholders must be loving this debate although I reckon dumping Intel in favor of ARM would take many many more years of development by which time Intel should have solutions to compete with ARM.

I believe the software applications will be drastically affected for this change do it won't happen so soon. Apple has to ensure compatibility so the current applications can run on the new chip.

This is a great analysis. I don't know that much about chips, but I do know ARM enables a lot of cost-savings and a lot of flexibility with suppliers.
