This is the information age. If you want to sell your product you got to share and market the information. And the technical data must be available to the engineers without much of hassle. Agreed distributors are doing great job. Thanks to Google also so much information is so easily made accessible.

@Barbara: Thanks for information. Design starts with parts generally purchased from catalogue supplier like Digikey, Mouser etc. As most design eventually graduate to bulk manufacturing, regular distributor can collect customer and project requirement data from catalogue distributor at deisgn stage and engage them with customer at early stage.

@hm: yes, the models can coexist, but for some reason they haven't coexisted comfortably. Avnet owned Allied for awhile and sold it; Digi-Key has a volume business but I'm not sure how extensive it is; and Mouser and TTI still keep at arm's length. The inventory models are so vastly different as well as the demands of the salesforce, service and support, being all thinsg to all custoemrs is still a challenge.

Is it not possible to have both large distribution and catalogue sales under one umbrella?

Is also nice to provide T and M instruments, design and training services to different customers.

I agree that the lines are becoming more blurry but if it results in a faster time to market then I suppose it is a model we all need to get used to.
