Adeniji, before implementing this system, we had alerted all vendors/suppliers, but nobody taken any necessary measures to avoid bad situations. While implementing also, we faced many hurdles from vendor side and some of the local vendors boycotted the selection procedure. But due to our firm decision, later they are forced to adhere with our filtration mechanism. Now everybody is happy and no big headaches.

Anandvy, we are following the same from 2009 onwards. Initially 2009-10 two vendors got caught and now they are taking atmost care to avoid such situations.  As of now we are satisfied with the filtering and scrutiny process, but we are not clamming it's the best. We have a plan to revamp the system once in 4-5 years, with the latest developments.

 "if this part has been obsolete for 12 years and the only place it's now available is from China, that probably means it's counterfeit,"

@Tam, thanks for the post. Am curious to know if China is the only major producer of Counterfiet componenets. What percentage of componenets produced in China is counterfiet ?

payments will be blocked for that entire lot/batch and the vendor is black listed from all business for next 4-5 years.

@Jacob, good to hear the initiatives taken by  your company to fight counterfieting. So have you seen drop in the counterfiet componenets sourced by your company ? Are these measures sufficient to fight the counterfieting ?

@Jacob,

That might not be a bad idea at all, that will definately make every vendor that want to keep being relevant to tighten up and not  just make costly assumption.

Owen, EBN doesn't have a preview feature but there's the next best thing, which is the edit/delete feature. You can simply log in again and check out your posting and make any necessary corrections.

Tam, regarding the specifics of "b - notify the government..." beyond calling the DHS, according to the NDAA, as reported by iHS  " the burden appears to fall on DoD contractors and subcontractors to report any cases of suspect counterfeit parts to the Government Industry Data Exchange Program (GIDEP)". Heretofore a widely under-used program which has contributed to the problem.

Tam, in normally course our company is following a different method. We used to collect components through preferred channel partners/vendors and refreshing the list once in 2 years. Since we are getting the components in credit, if any counterfeit components are found, payments will be blocked for that entire lot/batch and the vendor is black listed from all business for next 4-5 years.

You've heard the saying "the No. 1 supply chain risk is your people." That hasn't always been the case. But today's complex global supply chain requires a new type of multitalented employee. It's one who understands, finance, marketing, economics, is savvy with technology, graceful with relationships and can think analytically. Where are these people? Are universities properly preparing the next generation supply chain professionals? How do train your existing workforce for these new, demanding positions? Brian Fuller, editor-in-chief of EBN, will lead a 60-minute Avnet Velocity panel discussion that will ask and answer these and other questions swirling around today's supply-chain talent challenges.
