What are the pros and cons of MEMS timing versus quartz? How about in terms of costs?

I remember TI was at the forefront of MEMS technology some years ago.  I wonder if they are involved in the latest product line, either former employees or from a licensing standpoint.

I am seeing a big uptick in mechanical MEMS for position sensing and gyros which are creeping into many consumer products like phones and games controllers.  I also see a lot of R&D in MEMS for medical where "electronic pills" are swallowed and monitor the body as it passes through.  Very exciting times for MEMS.  The holy grail will be when we truly can integrate MEMS with the necessary analog and digital processing on the same piece of silicon.

Yes Prabhakar, I quiet share your assertion. High degree of MEMS accuracy should be most priority since its applications cover wider area of Medical sector, as well as Biotechnology.

A viable alternative

As the operating frequencies for processors and associated timimg circuits are reaching new highs,  alternate solutions were required to have greater accuracy, stability and long life. MEMS looks to have fulfilled all these requirements and has become a viable alternative to the conventional quatz oscillators

Thanks mfbertozzi. Yes you are right as per heterogeneous integration. I also came across an article by a group of researchers working on  heterogenous 3-D electronics by use of dissimilar semiconductor materials.

Good point WB, it seems one of key production should be the area named "heterogeneous integration" of which aim focusing on the possibility to move current single device approach, on sip - system in package. According to recent studies in the sector, it seems production could potentially address a market size about 10B US$ by 2015.

Thanks for the article, very informative. And kudos to both SiTime and IDT on MEMS new development. Am waiting to see its full production come 2012.

Tony and Scot--I'm going to take your word on MEMS. I know they are a really cool technology and I actually visited a MEMS fab a long time ago. Aside from that I'm lost, but it's good to see articles of the caliber on the site:-)

You've heard the saying "the No. 1 supply chain risk is your people." That hasn't always been the case. But today's complex global supply chain requires a new type of multitalented employee. It's one who understands, finance, marketing, economics, is savvy with technology, graceful with relationships and can think analytically. Where are these people? Are universities properly preparing the next generation supply chain professionals? How do train your existing workforce for these new, demanding positions? Brian Fuller, editor-in-chief of EBN, will lead a 60-minute Avnet Velocity panel discussion that will ask and answer these and other questions swirling around today's supply-chain talent challenges.
