You are right. I believe most stuff shown at FTF are prototype for the next bleeding edge products to be shown at CES.

@t.alex

You're right - the focus of CES is on the vendors, and if you are a buyer, then CES is absolutely for you.

However, there is more to CES than just the vendors.  They have keynote speeches that talk about market dynamics, they have technical sessions, and sessions where "market leaders" discuss what we can expect over the next few years.  If you're going to CES to take advantage of anything other than looking at all the new products on the market, then FTF is a better choice.

@FLYINGSCOT

At FTF only partners who sponsor the event can demo at the event.  Their Technology Lab was a large open space, similar to CES just on a much smaller scale, where people could wander around and see all the demos.  Maybe a dozen compared to the hundreds of thousands at CES.  But – most everyone who attends FTF will be showing something at the next CES, so it's a good place to get a feel for where the designer's head is at when they aren't in selling mode.

There were about 2k attendees, many of who where looking to release a product in the new year or two.

How big is FTF versus CES in terms of suppliers/presenters and attendees?

Are they comparable?

I believe they are not really comparable in the first place. CES is more for vendors to showcase their latest creations. And is it the same for FTF?

"My colleague, Tony Massimini, told me to 'wear comfortable shoes,' a bit of advice that made me worried FTF would mimic the chaos of CES a little too closely."

At least he didn't tell you to wear a costume. That would have been embarrassing.

Peter Drucker famously said "Trying to predict the future is like trying to drive down a country road at night with no lights while looking out the back window." Yet in the razor's-edge world of electronics—with a lean supply chain and just-in-time demands—the need to know the future is vital. While no one really can accurately predict the future, we can take guidance from another Drucker saying which is the best way to predict the future is to create it.

You've heard the saying "the No. 1 supply chain risk is your people." That hasn't always been the case. But today's complex global supply chain requires a new type of multitalented employee. It's one who understands, finance, marketing, economics, is savvy with technology, graceful with relationships and can think analytically. Where are these people? Are universities properly preparing the next generation supply chain professionals? How do train your existing workforce for these new, demanding positions? Brian Fuller, editor-in-chief of EBN, will lead a 60-minute Avnet Velocity panel discussion that will ask and answer these and other questions swirling around today's supply-chain talent challenges.
