In order to accurately answer your inquiry, would you please clarify if you are referring to fixture manufacturers or the component technologies that are the "guts" of the solid state lighting solution.

I certainly share your assessment that SSL is the wave of the future and not a consumer flash in the pan product.

My point regarding the importance of time to market was primarily for competitive reasons.  This is an industry that is primed for significant growth for the foreseeable future.  It is attracting new market entrants by the day.  I think there is an advantage for companies to establish themselves right now - with the ability to design, produce and deliver quality products to the market.  There is still a lot of confusion from an end consumer perspective and I believe it creates market leading branding opportunities for companies on the front end of this significant technology shift.  The overall market opportunity isn't going away, but  individual success will be impacted by executing on many of the items referenced in the main blog post.

The TAM must be huge for this market and should be long lived.  Do you know who the major players are what their relative merits are?

"Challenges of SSL"
William K.   2/5/2013 6:40:15 PM

One very large difference between the SSL market and most other electronic comsumer consumables is that SSL is not some flashy fad that will be gone in six months. So that means that time to market does not need to be the burning hot emergency issue associated with a lot of products. This market is going to be arround for a while, and hopefully those organizations producing poor quality products will be washed out quickly. That would be the best case.

My point is that while there are large technical advances being made, or at least announced, weekly, and so things are changing. Some will try to constantly adjust their product to keep it at the bleeding edge, while others will attempt to hold onto some nich with a few quality products, possibly releasing upgrades as the various aspects mature. And a few will be producing produts that will only be available for a few months, then the products will be abandoned, and replacements will never be available. We have certainly seen that before.

SSL Market is evoloving big way with many new buildings and commercial complexes perfering to reduce the energy cost even with higher investment in lighting for the first time. The firms should engage in right channels with the product companies and right set of execution teams to successfully implement the projects.

Color Rendering Index of light

One of the most important specifications for SSL is CRI, Color Rendering Index. It is very nice to have SSL with CRI of 96 or better with very high efficiency.
