Definetely something you don't get in College and critical to components engineering. Thanks for the nice comparisons to real life, it makes it easier to understand.

@anandvy, absolutely. The discipline is called derating. I have a PDF on my website that provides the safe margines for each type of component. Sometimes there is a cost tradeoff for going with higher rated components, but most often it is negligible. The real thing to watch for is a package or footprint size change when you bump up the handling capacities.

If I can't mitigate any of those stresses, I can anticipate them in my design considerations and pick components that have higher stress handling capacities. Not pushing the components to their limits will extend their life.


@Douglas,  thanks for explaining the importance of Bathtub and PLM. Dont you think its always better to choose components with higher stress handling capacities rather than choose components which have less stress handling capability?
