I once worked for a company that had several years of planned improvements ready to roll out for one of its products. PLM was easy to plan in such a case. It's where technology and competitors take unexpected turns that I would guess PLM must be harder to implement smoothly.

Our company is starting to integrate all our porcesses into PLM.  this includes idea generation and new product development.  All the various reviews in the flow and the respective signoffs will be handled automatically by PLM.  I believe it is an exciting opportunity for us to streamline our front to back flows and get the whole diverse company signing from the same music sheet.

I am bit confused about the idea of using multiple PLM products to manage various aspects of a company's product life cycle management.

It may become a tricky task for the top management when sich different PLM systems generate conflicting pointers - in terms of business perspective or in terms of the technology perspective.

A single PLM software to address all issues is better in my opinion.

"high-tech companies will always be operating with three or more PLM vendors needed to completely span the various PLM capability areas"

Business operations are getting so complex that companies can no longer rely on just one vendor to provide the right software package that works for all their business processes. An integrated approach has become the best solution for them to meet their business goal.

Kevin, What product life cycle management applications do better than any other enterprise resource management applications is keep things real. They bring every part of the operation to life and give users the opportunity to test every step and ensure they work as expected. The manufacturing industry is complicated but using PLM systems, companies can squeeze more efficiencies out of their operations and avoid systemic problems.

Peter Drucker famously said "Trying to predict the future is like trying to drive down a country road at night with no lights while looking out the back window." Yet in the razor's-edge world of electronics—with a lean supply chain and just-in-time demands—the need to know the future is vital.

You've heard the saying "the No. 1 supply chain risk is your people." That hasn't always been the case. But today's complex global supply chain requires a new type of multitalented employee. It's one who understands, finance, marketing, economics, is savvy with technology, graceful with relationships and can think analytically. Where are these people? Are universities properly preparing the next generation supply chain professionals? How do train your existing workforce for these new, demanding positions? Brian Fuller, editor-in-chief of EBN, will lead a 60-minute Avnet Velocity panel discussion that will ask and answer these and other questions swirling around today's supply-chain talent challenges.
