This is the first in a three-part series on IDEA-QMS-9090, an auditable standard that covers the ability to source, inspect, store, and deliver product and answers the call for a responsible procurement solution.
The goal of the Independent Distributors of Electronics Association (IDEA) is to build programs and standards that support and promote responsible procurement solutions for end customers who use the components we sell. In other words, to create standards, certifications, and training that prevent counterfeit and substandard parts from entering the supply chain.
IDEA-STD-1010 was a great first step in that direction as the first written standard for the inspection of parts purchased in the Open Market. While IDEA-STD-1010 has undergone one revision and is set to undergo a second, it has seen wide adoption and received significant praise.
The IDEA-ICE-3000 Professional Inspector Certification is another program that has helped build trust through its rigorous training and exam requirements. It, too, has received wide adoption and garnered significant recognition.
Lastly, the IDEA Membership Requirements themselves, from the requirement to be ANSI/ESD S20.20 certified to requiring background checks for owners and principles, have significantly raised the bar. But at IDEA, we realized that IDEA-STD-1010, the IDEA-ICE-3000 program, and higher membership standards weren't enough. There needed to be more.
To push the bar even higher, there had to be an even larger standard; something that could be verified and vetted. While IDEA-STD-1010 is a standard and its adoption is required of IDEA members, it is a guide that is not auditable except by its users and those who would audit those users. No, we needed something that a credentialed outsider could audit to verify that the companies that endeavored to reach a higher standard could prove that in fact they had.
To achieve this, IDEA-QMS-9090 was developed. IDEA-QMS-9090: Quality Management System Standard for Independent Distributors of Electronics Association Members is an auditable standard that covers the ability to source, inspect, store, and deliver product and answers the call for a responsible procurement solution. It was not an easy task, and its adoption will be one that serves to raise the bar yet again in the Independent Distribution Industry.
