As much as we bemoan a dearth of young professionals coming into the electronics supply chain profession, it's good to remember that some notable young people are taking their place at a variety of electronics and supply chain organizations around the country.
Recently, ThomasNet and the Institute for Supply Chain Management (ISM) announced the winners of its 30 Under 30 Rising Supply Chain Stars Recognition Program. In its second year, the program is designed to "recognize individuals who have demonstrated leadership, innovation, collaboration, and other outstanding attributes," the companies said.
"These young professionals are leading by example for a new generation in the procurement field by demonstrating the huge accomplishments possible," said Mark Holst-Knudsen, president of ThomasNet."They are true role models for how millennials are paving a new path in supply chain management."
Millennials will account for three quarters of the global workforce by 2025, according to the Deloitte Millennial Survey. Now, organizations need to start providing role models and highlight the supply chain and procurement professions as viable and exciting options.
Based on the latest 30 Under 30 awards, the electronics industry is doing an excellent job of attracting young, talented workers. In fact, one-third of the winners were in manufacturing and electronics related industries. Other winners came from education, financial services, medical devices, information technology, oil and gas, and government."Electronics was more represented than before," M.L. Peck, senior vice president, program and product development at ISM told EBN in an interview. "The winners are finding their place in the organization quickly and playing key roles in shaping process and key business initiatives."
The winners, who had an average age of 27 years old compared to 28 years old last year, were chosen from among scores of nominees. "Between the years collectively, we had 300 qualified nominees, which is amazing given the caliber of winners," Donna Cicale, director, audience development at ThomasNet told EBN. "The first year set the bar really high and it spurred an even better quality of nominations this year."
In broad brush, these millennial superstars have a few things in common. "They want to give back, to the community, their workplace, and family," said Cicale. "It's not about getting recognition per se but to get opportunities to use skills to do justice to their company. They want to step up and lead and are naturally adept at collaboration."
In addition, these workers have in common that they thrive in dynamic work environments and cross-cultural situations. They are adept at taking in and synthesizing large amounts of data and turning that data into an action plan. "What we are seeing with this group is that they don't seem to be intimidated or overwhelmed by data," Cicale said.
