Only 60 years? I thought the first quartz oscillator was built in 1921. Oh, wait, that was to make a frequency reference, not for timing (I think). I remember taking apart a blown quartz crystal in an oscillator to see what it looked like.

These products seem like a promising development for the supply chain. Anything that brings down product lead times is a good thing.

I was not previously aware of the thermal sensitivty of quartz  - if the new MEMS technology can address this issue, I'm sure it will benefit many applications.

MEMS oscillators are not just beneficial for their availability and short lead times but also for their quality, reliability, size, isolation from shock and vibration, lack of activity dips and much more.  At SiTime (www.sitime.com), we have shipped more than 200 million units over the last 7 years and continue to grow at a rapid pace serving customers in all markets worldwide.  Once the customers use the MEMS oscillators in one sockets, they have always come back for more.
