@Hailley, the noticable OS that will be picking up shares is Windows. I think after Nokia's acquisition, Windows might further accelerate its market share growth. I own a Nokia smartphone and i find Window's interface quite appealing.

Also, who are others? Is Samsung's Tizen one of them?

@T.alex, i agree that Andriod has picked up market shares due to fragmented software domain but unless Google plugs the security concerns the cosumers will be looking out for better OS.

"On the other hand, reports of malware affecting these systems represent the flipside to the open-source coin"

I would say that it is not worse as what we have seen in windows based system and probably virus is coming hand by hand with popularity.

Nemos,

That is a fair(and accurate) Statement to make.

As Android's Popularity has risen;more and more Virus/Malware Writers have started writing Code Directed at it.

The way I look at it most modern Day OSes are reasonably secure(as long as they are patched);the vulnerabilities lie in the Extensions/Apps which may not be patched with the same Regularity(or have the same Security Resources) as the Big OS Companies.

Hailey,

If you break the Data down (region-wise) you will clearly see that its not yet over from MSFT.

They have a fair-chance,Especially with the latest Windows 8.1 as they up their game big-time.

RIM is definitely going the way of the Dodo.

Himanshu,

All I can say is you made a Good Choice.

Have you downloaded and worked with the Windows File Manager yet?

MSFT has the heft/Name and Resources to succeed in this game.

And now that they have gotten Satya Nadella in the saddle,I am sure they will go allout to succeed here.

Tizen as well as Mozilla's OS are also reasonably bignames amongst the Cheaper Smartphones out there.

Samsung is very keen to give a big push to Tizen.Lets see if they succeed.

Himanshu,

Its not just about Malware but rather which OS gives the most Integrated & Seamless experience.

I have little Doubt that MSFT will win here in the end.

Google is too busy fighting with both Apple and Samsung to notice who's coming fast at them in the rear-view window.

You have to look closely at Africa and Asia to figure out where Android is heading now

Guys,

I just read Mary Meeker's Annual Internet Report(for KPCB) and the results clearly state that Africa and Asia are leading the World's Mobile Charge.

To get an idea of which way the wind is blowing there you need to track Africa very, very closely.

Prime reason?

They never were able to afford or use Laptops/PCs.
