As we get ready to turn the calendar page to a new year, it's a perfect time to look at what trends and topics will take top billing for the electronics industry in 2016.
As an industry in 2016, we need to maintain a focus on keeping products, components, and materials at their highest performance and value at all times. Asset management should be an essential part of all of our processes. We should be constantly reviewing how we can improve on maintaining, upgrading, re-using and recycling, electrical goods cost-effectively.
The circular economy is a practical solution to conserving resources, where products such as a smartphone or TV will be seen in a different way, concentrating on their parts, not seeing them as they are but as opportunities for continuous value creation. Although for the supply chain this necessitates a revaluation of our practices.
Business models need to be reviewed, reformulating the way we work to place the concepts of continuous value creation as a key cornerstone of our ethos and procedure. In accommodating this, 2016 will see an emphasis upon the refurbishment of parts and products.
Repair avoidance is a crucial focus for OEMs, retailers, and network operators. The 'always on' consumer has increased the sense of urgency and dependency attached to devices, which consequently adds a sense of urgency to the repair process that all avoidance procedures must take into account.
Therefore, in 2016 we will see AMS companies become a bigger part of product lifecycles to help address this challenge. With dedicated engineering teams that are specialists in electronics testing and diagnostics, who will focus on developing faster and more advanced processes to identify and where able resolve issues as early as possible in the reverse logistics process.
With the wearable technology market set only to grow, the supply chain must be prepared for the influx of new devices, allocating resources and sourcing new parts, as well as ensuring all technicians and other relevant people are trained. In particular the AMS industry must be ready, as we are yet to see how this new product category will impact reverse logistics.
We may also see wearables being incorporated into supply chain procedures. For example, smartwatches could help site managers observe real-time performance of business processes, productivity, inventory levels and deliveries. As a result this will improve productivity by utilizing this information to make more informed decisions.
Leveraging data analytics
There are multiple benefits of leveraging data analytics for the supply chain industry, including reducing forecasting errors and enabling informed forward planning decisions, and better predictions for product and parts demand. As a result we will likely see the quicker execution of new ideas and in turn give of a higher level of service to customers.
As the importance of data analytics becomes more prevalent, the AMS industry needs to get better at efficiently collating and acting upon the volumes of data that we all have. It will not only be good for business process efficiencies but also beneficial for future product versions and next generation products.
