This is a good news coming out on the side of Wireless Sensor Network and 802.15.4 scheme. Infact, after long time in bewilderment Zigbee market space has been allocated - deployment and implementation might spread faster than expected this year.

I think smart grid technology ratifications of standard from the major players is the cause of latency in market apperance of 802.15.4/Zigbee chip design. Let us wait to watch how market demands push technology innovation in this aspect.

Everyone these days is talking about smart cities this and that. What they are saying is that alot of the things will be interconnected. Advanced Metering infrastructure is one of them. These RF meters are able to provide 2 way communications between the utility and people's house. It will transmit information about how much energy you are using almost near real time. Also, it will enable the energy utility company remotely to connect / disconnect your home with electricity if you hadn't pay up the bills. And alot more other functionalities.

Then you install these home area network devices where you can give permission and let the utility control your thermostat, pool pumps, refrigerator cycle etc. That's why radio frequency (RF meters) are become increasingly popular for utilities. It not only saves cost but enable customers to manage the usage pattern to save energy during the peak times.

But what's really growing is the security. There needs to be security in every step from the home area network to the neighborhood network to the wide area network and then to the utility's proprietary network.

Peter Drucker famously said "Trying to predict the future is like trying to drive down a country road at night with no lights while looking out the back window." Yet in the razor's-edge world of electronics—with a lean supply chain and just-in-time demands—the need to know the future is vital. While no one really can accurately predict the future, we can take guidance from another Drucker saying which is the best way to predict the future is to create it.

It's one who understands, finance, marketing, economics, is savvy with technology, graceful with relationships and can think analytically. Where are these people? Are universities properly preparing the next generation supply chain professionals? How do train your existing workforce for these new, demanding positions? Brian Fuller, editor-in-chief of EBN, will lead a 60-minute Avnet Velocity panel discussion that will ask and answer these and other questions swirling around today's supply-chain talent challenges.
