Well, they have the most experience producing phones (hardware) and from what I've seen, their devices are pretty good.
The problem is that people want to have the apps that my friends have, and they either have iOS or Android. Who's going to help them when they run into trouble with Microsoft?

Do you mean that Nokia's skills shortage could be as great as everyone else's in five years, so that they get even worse? Sure, they could do that. The skills shortage could probably trickle down from the top.
Devil you know always better than Angel you have no knowledge about. Nokia's trust in Windows should have been limited to PC device until its OS for mobile phone gains market success, i think.
Android's market doors are slightly left ajar for Nokia not totally opened any more. But had Nokia joined the league of Android, would it have performed better?
Well, they trusted Microsoft but its clear that wont work. Nokia is not in the app world so they can go with Android and based on their experience with hardware, survive.
Nokia's downfall is its skills shortage. It isn't high enough, judging by industry standards. Most successful companies have a really big skills shortage. Nokia doesn't have nearly a big as one as is needed to rank them among the top companies.

Wale, Nokia's market share in the smartphone market is now down to less down 10 percent and the trend is down in a section that's experiencing solid growth. The history of the mobile handset market has shown how companies that lose their grip on the No. 1 position or even start to lose market share experience great difficulties and aren't able to quickly recover. It happened to Motorola, Ericsson and now Nokia. I don't see Nokia gaining much in the next five years. It may bounce back eventually but that won't be until the Apple is spent and Samsung has tripped.
