Ariella, I do not disagree with you but I am at some level wondering how we balance a government's duty to maintain and preserve order versus rights fundamental to human lives and businesses. When do we cross that line and how? If a government can, in a time of war, order citizens to arms (and to their death) shouldn't such a government also be able to seize, control or limit access to services such as the web? In other words, what circumstances, if any, would justify a decision to curb web access?
So far the overhwelming majority voted "no," with a small representation for "don't know," though no one voted "yes." It's hard to justify such a shut down in light of the constitutional right to freedom of speech and freedom of the press. If it is intended to block all communication, all phones, both landlines and cellular, would have to be shut down as well. And wouldn't the broadcasting companies also have to be silenced? I can't see a way to justify all that.
