I also applied for one and never received any other info. I'm not sure I would pay for that just yet, because I'm not always online but the concept is fascinating.

@pocharle yes, there is clearly a parallel there.

True, it makes more sense for businesses to go after big enterprises, but I was trying to say that most cloud services relate to storage, backups, etc not so much for software, services, etc.

Well in absolute terms the cloud computing might not make environment cleaner as more and more user would be able to access more and connect more. But companies have more resources to use cleaner technologies for data storage and servers.

i wonder what happen to the Google's Chrome netbooks initiative. I remember that they started publicizing the Chrome based netbook and i applied for one (but never hear back anything).

Years back in undergrad, a guest lecturer (who I think was one of the founders of the net) stated that he felt there would be a shift back to client-server terminal-based computing. Maybe the push to move everything to the cloud is just that. Soon me might only see a monitor (keyboard, mouse optional).

Mr. Rogues, so far awareness and education of cloud computation have geared towards enterprise, which i think most cloud service providers have also failed to push cloud computing towards consumer market.

I think we will see a lot of improvemente when 'cloud computing' moves beyond simple storage, people still buy computers with 250 GB HDD but it would be great to see more Chrome netbooks.

Is shifting towards cloud computing gaining momentum at rate expected? @Nemos, i share from your assertion. I think, amongst all the technologies cloud computing will remain as traditional computing.

I could agree with previous posts; in addition, I would like to put on the table other perspective for thinking positive about cloud advent. Cloud paradigm, by definition, will allow access to IT services, easier then now. As consequence, telecommuting could potentially ramp a lot and then considerable savings in CO2 emission go up, as per travels' reduction.

Peter Drucker famously said "Trying to predict the future is like trying to drive down a country road at night with no lights while looking out the back window." Yet in the razor's-edge world of electronics—with a lean supply chain and just-in-time demands—the need to know the future is vital. While no one really can accurately predict the future, we can take guidance from another Drucker saying which is the best way to predict the future is to create it.

You've heard the saying "the No. 1 supply chain risk is your people." That hasn't always been the case. But today's complex global supply chain requires a new type of multitalented employee. It's one who understands, finance, marketing, economics, is savvy with technology, graceful with relationships and can think analytically. Where are these people? Are universities properly preparing the next generation supply chain professionals? How do train your existing workforce for these new, demanding positions? Brian Fuller, editor-in-chief of EBN, will lead a 60-minute Avnet Velocity panel discussion that will ask and answer these and other questions swirling around today's supply-chain talent challenges.
