It is a good thing for a company to give as long as it does not promote any for of bias or a means of lobbying to promote the business.

It's nice to hear about Avnet being active in charity. Al, are there other CSR programs that Avnet is part of which are targetted towards less-developed parts of the world?

What Avnet employees did is an expression of the reason for Christmas season.

The publicity could be of a good mind, a good example for other companies to follow, engaging in the act of giving.

Hospice, that is what I was meaning. Having a good public view of the company is incentive for the company to do charity work. It also would motivate competing companies to do the same.

Almarg, it's very nice to tread about Avnet's Christmas program. Spreading Christmas message through charity is very good and appreciable. That's one of the way of really enjoying the Christmas.

@Hospice: Yes, I agree with you. Charity work is wonderful work. But then, charity work should not be generally publicized by company's own person. It is ok if non aligned media notices the work and highlight it.

To my guess, Avnet Corporate policy may not agree with this. Most corporate do wonderful work for charity but they may not make it public.

@Clairvoyant:

 "Having charity events linked with companies sets a good public view of the company as well."

The primary reason for enterprise involvement in charity events should not be for public relationship. Charity work should be deprived of any deguised motive. The only way I can agree with this post is that it may motivate other companies to engage in charity events as well. Otherwise, it is not woth it.

"employees spent part of their day spending all the money on toys for children in need."

Christmas is a time when many companies engage in charity events and any action that is intented to help people in need is praiseworthy.

Peter Drucker famously said "Trying to predict the future is like trying to drive down a country road at night with no lights while looking out the back window." Yet in the razor's-edge world of electronics—with a lean supply chain and just-in-time demands—the need to know the future is vital. While no one really can accurately predict the future, we can take guidance from another Drucker saying which is the best way to predict the future is to create it.

You've heard the saying "the No. 1 supply chain risk is your people." That hasn't always been the case. But today's complex global supply chain requires a new type of multitalented employee. It's one who understands, finance, marketing, economics, is savvy with technology, graceful with relationships and can think analytically. Where are these people? Are universities properly preparing the next generation supply chain professionals? How do train your existing workforce for these new, demanding positions? Brian Fuller, editor-in-chief of EBN, will lead a 60-minute Avnet Velocity panel discussion that will ask and answer these and other questions swirling around today's supply-chain talent challenges.
