This is so true, and deeply driven by cost and time to market factors. Rarely do we seen any companies 'invent' every products themselves.

Bruce, you are right. Eventhough you can maintain quality through different steps, the identity of our own product has changed. Now a day's most of the branded companies are just like an assembling unit. They are getting the components from third part vendors and simply assembling and marketing with the brand label.

This is a really good perspective and an analysis of something that is visceral and hard to explain. IBM has retained "Think" throughout some wrenching chnages, and, in fact, files more patents than any company in the world. HP has ceased to Invent and needs to recapture the magic. Maybe they should move to Reinvent for the time being
