Until there's someone who witnessed or experienced it during the election.  Though, i still doubt this research work applicability for election monitoring.

Was this technique used in the recent US election? I wonder if there are any figures available of an estimate of tampering.

Objectives of conducting a useful research for such purpose is nice but this particular task seems blurred to me.

@anandvy,

I understand you now, maybe better proximity or internet-ready device which can also make call are the reasons.

Well, the introduction of any monitoring system especially cameras will definately give this same result any where.

@Adenji, true. I am also not sure what advantages these smartphone have over security cameras. I guess the only advantage will be easy mobility of smartphone cameras.

I doubt this would be the case. Having human intervention necessary lends itself to the same issue that they are trying to prevent. Technology must be the driver.

I do not quite get the idea. Someone will be snapping pictures at the polling station ? Is it any different from security camera ?

Himanshu, good question. The team sent out local researchers to take pictures of the forms containing the final count result at more than 400 polling stations during the 2010 parliamentary elections. On the day of voting, around half of the stations in the study were told that this instantaneous record would be made the following day. Research found that  found that this announcement of monitoring reduced the amount of tampering by 60 per cent.

tirlapur, i did not quite understand the research. So, is the snap after, before or during the elections? And why only smartphone camera and not with just any camera or such devices that can take pictures with maybe some computing power, if necessary?
