t.alex, true and even within different countries, the standards for design of power circuits differ. Obviously the volume of power that will be consumed, the size of the device for which power is required and the regulations also affect design considerations.

Beginning of optimum utilization

Mark, it is amazing how industry has been meeting with the ever-increasing and apparently impossible demands of users of different categories. The reduction in chip size, power consumption and costs, all simultaneously is a big achievement. We can also think about it in a negative manner i.e. that previously in the same size of the board, utilization was not optimum and now we are reaching that optimum level. Obviously there were sound reasons for that one being lack of efficient manufacturing technology.

When it comes to power supply circuit, we tend to stick with those well-proven and thoroughly-tested design. In fact every design is different and there is no such thing as one-size-fit-all any more.
