There are potential problems with magnet based technology. The comparison is with trains. Such technologies will be suitable for large transport vehicles which anyway have very constrained movability and have well defined route. If we can help reduce the fuel cost by optimizing the route and cogestion using this technology then we will already achieve a lot.

21st century the era of technology, there is everyday something new to hear about. It is really an impressive idea to construct magnetic roads as it will reduce the risk of accidents and somewhat best way to conserve energy but it's no doubt a big budget project which will definitely take some time to get implemented completely.

@Hospice - Of course, safety has to be a primary metric for any car guidance technology. But if that area is comparable, cost of implementation will be one of the other metrics.

@eldredge: Safety of driverless cars should be the priority. If this requires that additional infrastructures be built, I think it is better to take all the necessary precautions.

@ FLYINGSCOT, I believe it is possible but I just feel the safest would still need a rail or some kind of special structure to safe guide movement.

One major issue may be competitive technology. If perfected, the technology used for the driverless Google car could product the same result without the same infrastructure requirements.

I often think of this when I am on a busy freeway.  Without a massive infrastructure investment I struggle to see how we can ever have a real nap at the wheel and stay alive.

"The Swedish carmaker launched an EU-funded SARTRE Project, which has a goal to get cars to gather into cooperative "road trains" travelling at a consistent speed in a single lane to save gas and reduce lane-change-induced chaos."

Kevin, idea is good if other automobile companies are also folloing the same thing. Otherwise it may end up as a mess.

@hailey: Surely the cost will be high but in the end it all depends on what sort of a positive impact it has towards you or the organization.

I couldn't help but think of the Disney Autotopia ride when i read about this... On a more serious note, it sounds interesting but it would take a lot of time to build that sort of infrastructure. I'll bet it would be an expensive project.
