10 Rising Stars: Under 30s Shape the High-Technology Supply Chain

The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) and Thomasnet.com, for the third year in a row, have identified a group of millennial supply chain superstars as the 30 Under 30 Rising Supply Chain Stars. In every vertical, these young professionals have a strong track record of making a difference. 

One third of the winners are working for leading technology, electronics, and logistics companies, including Dell, SpaceX, Flex, Fluke, and Cisco. “The unique characteristics of the electronics industry is that it is high stakes and fast moving, so it’s not surprising that it’s an attractive option. If you look at the companies represented in the winners, there are a lot of big names with respected supply chains,” said ISM chief executive officer Tom Derry. “These companies understand that it is critically important to attract great young talent. ” 

The caliber of winners and companies also points to the evolution of the supply chain function in most organizations. “Over the last several years, supply chain management has become sexy… It’s cool,” said Uphoff. “It’s come from the back office to the front office in terms of impact. Apple’s CEO Tim Cook came out of supply chain management—and he’s a rock star for the millennials.”  Further, there’s increased awareness at the university as more colleges offer degree and internship programs, he added.

“Our 30 Under 30 winners are fast becoming leaders in the digital industrial economy,” said Tony Uphoff, President and CEO of Thomas Publishing. “They combine talent, innovation and technological savvy in their work and we are excited to honor them as true role models for millennials in supply chain management.”

Out of 200 entrants, 30 supply chain professionals (ranging in age from 23 years old to 30 years old) stood out as having remarkable demonstrated leadership, innovation, collaboration, and other outstanding attributes. “This year’s crop of stars is inspiring. Due to demographics, younger generations in the workforce are stepping into leadership roles earlier than their predecessors. This year’s winners are leading the charge, and show that our future is in capable hands,” said Derry.  This year, 40% of this year’s winners had intentionally pursued a career in supply chain management, compared to 17% in the first year of the program, he added.

The winners contributed to their companies in a variety of ways, including: 

  • Leveraging the Internet of things (IoT) to foster supply chain innovation
  • Delivering over $16 million in cost savings
  • Reducing expedited freight costs by over 70%

The contest winners were given a receive a one-year membership to ISM; complimentary admittance to ISM2017 annual conference in Orlando, Florida (May 21-24); and a Thomasnet.com Team Training Lunch and Learn session for them and their colleagues.
