6 Measurable Ways Equipment Maintenance Training Benefits Your Factory

They're like the fire department or your friendly neighborhood locksmith: you don't often think about your equipment repair technicians, but you're sure glad they're around when you need them.

For many manufacturers, equipment techs are the unsung heroes that keep factories running and producing high quality products week after week. The best technicians, in fact, are adept at collecting and analyzing terabytes of data that can predict a problem before it even occurs. All of that skill and experience, however, requires training. And for any business, decisions on matters like training depend on ROI.

It's for this reason that Advanced Technology Services conducted and recently completed a detailed study on the ways equipment maintenance training benefits manufacturers. The rigorous, data-led study looked at records from nearly 1,200 maintenance technicians at 67 different manufacturing sites across the U.S. over a span of 13 months, cross-referenced against levels of training.

The ATS study was conducted by SkillPoint, Advanced Technology Services' training subsidiary. SkillPoint conducts instructor-led, hands-on (use of simulators), and online technical training at manufacturing sites around the country. Training is done inside SkillPoint's mobile classrooms or within the customer's facilities, and at hours convenient to both employer and employees. Typical topics range from electrical theory and hydraulics to PLC and CNC maintenance.

Using linear regression of various performance metrics, the study determined that 30 to 40 hours of training per technician per year generated numerous measurable advantages. In fact, that week's worth of training seemed to be a sweet spot; while the analysis demonstrated improvement after that level, the improvements tended to level off.

Technical maintenance training is playing a critical role in closing the skills gap impacting American manufacturing. A culture and commitment to continuous learning helps attract top talent, lessens attrition, and has multiple positive effects on efficiency and productivity. Maintain Proactive Performance: Proactive versus reactive responses to equipment maintenance is a key indicator of world-class performance and reliability. The SkillPoint research showed that 40 hours of training correlated with a 9.4% increase in proactive performance among technicians in the study.
