Following the news of tariffs on good coming from Mexico to the U.S. and the ongoing tariffs saga, we reached out to a few friends and colleagues from the electronics manufacturing services (EMS) world to find out what they and their customers think of this thorny issue.
Racecars & Printers: My Week at the Additive Manufacturers User Group
Philip Spagnoli Stoten 4/17/2019 Post a comment
I am a fan of additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing. I’ve been following this sector for years, watching it develop from a hobbyist tool to a prototype solution, and now to a fully-fledged industrial technology. These developments are due, in no small part, to the companies now participating in the sector that range from small startups to large printer and consumables brands. Earlier this month, I attended the Additive Manufacturers User Group in Chicago, to see the latest and greatest from this fast-moving industry.
Supply Chain Roundtable: Better Data Drives Better Decisions

The statement “Better data drives better decisions” may seem simple, but the analogy of “bad data in bad data out” has never been truer, or more significant. After all, we are not looking to collect data for its own sake, we are looking to collect and use data to derive better outcomes.
Electronics Supply Chain Roundtable: Smarter Materials Management

APEX may predominantly be an assembly show, but supply chain and materials management are on the very top of the visitors’ agendas as the deal with changes in tariffs, challenges with counterfeits, and of course, severe component shortages. It turns out that more line efficiency is lost due to missing or incorrect inventory at the SMT line than pretty much any other issue.
Electronics Supply Chain Roundtable: Create a Manufacturing Ecosystem
Philip Spagnoli Stoten 2/13/2019 (2) comments
Connected factories are one thing, but what about a connected manufacturing ecosystem? Surely more value can be delivered when many sites share data to drive best-in-class performance and global improvements. And what about the idea of crowdsourced anonymized data being used across the industry to improve performance throughout the value chain?
Just Like Being There: APEX 2018 & Actionable Data
Philip Spagnoli Stoten 4/10/2018 Post a comment
Data, data everywhere. It’s like water, if it’s not fit for consumption it’s no good to anyone. A focus on collecting data doesn’t serve us well, unless of course you’re selling data storage solution. What the industry needs to move from information to intelligence, is actionable data that improves and accelerates decision making. Better decision, made faster.
