Arrow Chosen as SPEAr Microprocessor Distributor

MELVILLE, N.Y. — Arrow Electronics EMEA has been chosen by STMicroelectronics (ST) as a specialist distribution partner for ST’s SPEAr embedded microprocessor family. Arrow was selected from among ST’s distribution network owing to its extensive engineering services capability and total solution provision, including the Arrow Embedded Platform Concept (EPC). An EPC board based on SPEAr processors is currently under development.

The ST SPEAr family of embedded microprocessors offers powerful processing cores with performance of up to 3000 MIPS and can manage external memory resources (DDR2/3, Flash) and a wealth of peripherals while remaining flexible enough to serve a broad range of applications. Combining an ARM926EJ-S 333MHz processor core with a rich set of audio, communication and connectivity interfaces, including those for Ethernet and USB Device/Host, I2C, the SPEAr3x0 MPU family is optimised to meet the particular challenges posed by human-machine interface, communications and security applications. The SPEAr600 delivers enhanced performance as a result of dual ARM926EJ-S cores, powerful connectivity features like Gigabit Ethernet, and a programmable LCD interface. The recently-introduced SPEAr13xx utilises a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 600MHz to deliver an optimised combination of processing performance and power reduction for next-generation communication and audio/video appliances.

Arrow’s engineering services help customers get the most from internal development resources by allowing project teams to focus on their own core competencies. From initial concept through design and prototyping to volume production, end of life and the provision of total solutions, Arrow works closely with customers at every step of the development and manufacturing cycle.

Dr. Bernhard Rauscher, vice president of Technical Marketing for STMicroelectronics EMEA, commented: “The SPEAr family of microprocessors is a highly sophisticated processor that delivers outstanding performance for designers of networked embedded systems. We are confident that partnering with Arrow will ensure that customers are able to realise their designs quickly and effectively through the support of Arrow’s extensive European engineering services team.”

Andy King, vice president engineering and marketing of Arrow EMEA, added: “As embedded systems become ever-present, Arrow continues to increase its focus on engineering support services and tools that help designers incorporate ever more complex embedded hardware and software into their applications. We are pleased that ST has recognised this strength and has chosen Arrow as a partner for its SPEAr embedded processor family.”
