I'm glad to know that the men get gifts too. And i'm sure the electronics retailers are thrilled too. :)

Thanks, Prabhakar. Yes, it makes sense that everyone gets gifts now that women also earn. Sometimes I tend to forget that this was not always the case. :/ It's also interesting to see how festival evolve over time. -Susan

@Susan,

You will find detailed information in Wikipedia . Just search for "Diwali" or "Deepavali"

Nowadays the men also get Return gifts from their wives and sisters as women have started earning.

Deepavali is a Sanskrit word meaning the row of lights.

I recently read an article that said Walmart has the Halloween market cornered and some of the numbers were truly staggering.  The USA loves to celebrate Halloween but I think the fever is quickly spreading across the globe.

Prabhakar, -- Thanks for the detailed explanation. :) I find these festivals very interesting. Is Deepavali a Sanskrit word? For a millenium? That's quite some time. What was the origin of the festival? Why only women get gifts? Not that I am complaining as it sounds very nice, but I am just wondering why only wives and sisters get gifts. And, for example, if you have two sisters, do you give a gift to your wife and your two sisters? Yes, the younger generation probably prefer electronics. This makes me think again in how was it centuries ago at the beginning of the festival. And why is this called a festival of lights if it seems to be related to gratitude and some kind of recognition to women. Or, am I too far from the meaning of the festival? Thanks so much for sharing this. :) -Susan

@Susan,

The Festival "Deepavali"  is celebrated all over India. Deepavali means a row of lights.  This is a festival of lights and lasts for 6 days.

This festival is celebrated in India traditionally for many a millenium.

Day1 is celebrated with worship of cows -they are the major source of milk in India and treated as next to God.

Day 2 is celebrated with worship of money

Day3 is celebrated with early morning bath ( before sunrise) and is the day to remove all waste and dirt from  everywhere.

Day 4 is celebrated with worship of Goddess of wealth with a lot of fireworks on roads.

Day 5 is the celebration day for all couples where the wives expect  some precious.valuable gift from their husbands.

Day 6 is the celebration between brothers and sisters where the sisters get gifts from their brothers.

All these days are parties with a variety of sweets,  fireworks, family get togethers and  all kind of lighting on every home and shop.

All in all from the poorest poor to the richy rich, everybody is on spending spree based upon their capacity.

For businesses in Apprels, Jewellery, Gold, Sweets, firecrackers, Home Appliances, vehicles, lghting systems this is a huge business opprtunity for which some businesses plan at least 6 months in advance.

Nowadays the main trend is to purchase electronic items especially by the younger generation.
