Carolinas ERA (CERA) Chapter Perseveres with Golf Tournament Two Days after Hurricane Matthew

The 13th Annual Dick Paden Memorial Golf Tournament was held in Raleigh,N.C., Monday, Oct. 10, just two days after Hurricane Matthew blew in from the coast. The tournament benefited the CERA Scholarship fund. A portion of the proceeds were also donated to the American Diabetes Association, in memory of Dick Paden. For many years prior to 2004, Dick Paden served as a CERA board member, president and delegate to the ERA National Board. He built the tournament to provide scholarships to Carolinas ERA members/dependents and their distributor partners/dependents.

Though the hurricane created some hurdles for the event, the chapter was able to persevere with a successful golf tournament. One manufacturer who endured a rocky flight from Denver got to his hotel only to find it without power. Some of the golfers and volunteers left from homes that morning that still did not have power. The golf course showed signs of the storm with standing water in sand bunkers and a tree down, but the tournament was able to go on.

“After every storm, the sun always shines. We only had one team that couldn't make it because of several major roads that were still under water or closed,” noted Annette Paden, the long-time coordinator of the event.

The teams were made up of reps, manufacturers, distributors and customers. There were 34 tee sponsors and 12 flag sponsors from many reps, distributors, manufacturers and customers.

The winning teams:

Flight A, Low Gross (57): Jim Davis, Kevin Bouziden, Troy Powell, Mike Pierce

Flight A, Low Net (57): Bob Ball, Larry Staffann, Bill Boswell, Paul Moore

Flight B, Low Gross (58): Tim Fleming, Mike Skole, Brian Flynn, Tim Gannon

Flight B, Low Net (60): Bob Kirkland, Tracy Spooner, Rick Vairo, John McClain

The chapter sends many thanks to the volunteers for the event: Wendy Simon (Sager), Meara Hamlin (Digi-Key), Deb Clark (SACS), Ruth Hartland (a friend to the chapter), Penny Hoglund (AEM Group), and Sandra Davis (SSD). The chapter also thanks the Board of Directors for its work in promoting the tournament.
