Electronics Supply Chain Roundtable: Data & the Supply Chain

Material shortages often cause more surface mount technology (SMT) line downtime than changeovers. It doesn’t make sense to develop faster changeovers in equipment sets if those lines are stopped due to wrong or insufficient components being available at the line. Line downtime cost millions and with some factories running at close to capacity the impact can be substantial and hard to recover from.

How can these performance losses be avoided? Software is often seen as the solution, but good materials management requires processes and hardware that ensure that components are where they need to be when they are needed. What’s more some components are wasted when reels are spliced together, resulting in inaccurate component counts.

Joining me to answer these questions and to discuss the importance of reliable data in the supply chain are Davina McDonnell, product marketing manager at Cogiscan and Zac Elliott, technical marketing engineer at Siemens PLM Software.
