Holiday Travel Offers Big OEM Opportunity

OEMs rejoice in the number of electronics gadgets and gifts that are purchased during the holidays, from smartphones and tablets to highly sophisticated appliances. Holiday travel, though, may further contribute to the bottom line for electronics OEMs.

Whether traveling to close out year-end business or visit friends and family, travelers want the benefits, from entertainment to ease of information, that electronics brings. E-readers, tablets, smartphones, and laptops top the list of must-have travel tools. Further, users are looking for smart vending machines to offer healthy food options and wearable technology that will offer a variety of benefits.

With the right design, OEMs can capture the loyalty of these on-the-go users. It's a delicate recipe though. Durability, usability, connectivity, and battery life top the list of buying considerations — and if the electronics designer can create the right combination, users are willing to pay more.

The infographic from Jabil below explores the ins and outs of this topic. Let us know in the comments section how travellers and on-the-go users are shifting the designs that your company makes.

This just looks like an ad for Jabil telling us portable technology is ubiquitous and growing.

I'm very thankful for technology especially this time of the year. Without technology i wouldn't be able to connect with my friends who are ocean away. The world is getting closer everyone can be connect with one click away. Nowadays we have many apps with video and phone calls – free service and available to anyone.

    FlyingScot,

That maybe so but you can't deny that Portable Technology is ubiquitous and growing rapidly as we speak.

What's fascinating is to watch how fast and how quickly Portable Technology is moving so fast and so quickly that one has to watch in amazement occasionally!

    Alex,

    Absolutely right!

The Ubiquitoness of Technology is immense today.

Its so easy to connect and stay in touch with your Near and Dear ones I am constantly amazed we don't do it more often throughout the year(other than the Holiday season).

    Hailey,

One should'nt forget all the stuff needed for Contingency Planning during Holidays!

Its a well known fact that more people travel during the Xmas Holidays but one also should'nt forget that the Weather is also quite messed up during this time.

So you need to plan for Contingencies(extra Battery packs, backups for everything just in case and so on)…

You need to plan effectively to succeed during these Holidays.

Alex, with a device and network, you can be get connected to your family and friends from any corner of the world. You never feel that you are alone. That's the advantage of network based devices.

@Jacob: Yes, true that we can stay connected to our families this holiday season, but only as long as the power doesn't run out. Speaking of which, I think batteries should be designed to last longer. I'm tired of carrying power banks everywhere no matter how portable they are.

@tech4people: Checking out the weather of a particular place in advance may help in saving money from buying the extra sets of things one would need in an emergency, and also saves luggage space. Weather apps to the rescue!

At this time of the year most of the people take vacations because of many reasons but mainly due to extra holidays and bonus money to spend. Most of us plan the vacations in advance and take care of the necessary arrangements like tickets, hotel booking etc. However, during vacation the importance now is to stay connected to friends and family and spend some time leisurely while reading ebooks or playing games. So gudgets like smartphones, DSL camera, tablet become an integral part of the vacation.

@Flyingscott, i have to respectfully disagree. As a contract manufacturer, Jabil works with a lot of OEMs to make products certainly. And we all know that tech is becoming ubiquitous. However, I found it interesting to see it all in one place, and particularly to think about some areas i handnt considered such as smart vending machines. The design goals, in the middle, also brought some good information together in one place. Here's the question that comes to mind for me: If travel is changing the way we make and use technology, there must be other areas that are doing the same. What should OEMs be paying attention to? Healthcare leaps to mind for me. what's your answer?

Anandvy, but be sure that your device is getting charge while using the power bank. I have a bad experience that the power bank is getting charge with my devices (reverse charging)

Himanushu, while am in leisure mood; would like to keep away from all friends & to make my own way of enjoyment with family. But won't be able to think even without get connected with devices. I mean devices and connectivity are an integral part of life.

Holiday travel is normally for doing something different than the routine.

Most of the people do not purchase any new electronic items just for the holidays.

The purchase done during holidays are mainly the suveniers, cloths and simple gifts for relatives and frinda to be given on return from holidays.

I believe there are not many people traveling without carrying at least one mobile device –smartphone and/or tablet– as a tool for maps, directions, communication with the destination, checking the weather, checking flight status, and plenty of other things.

There as many travel apps as one can imagine. Airlines and airports have their app proving information to passengers and online check-in.

A good percentage of travellers buy, or upgrade their mobile device prompt by a trip for one reason or another. So yes, there is pleanty of opportunity for OEMs. Travel is a huge market. Modern travellers don't leave their mobile devices behind.

Travellers are more and more also demanding more and better WiFi connectivity both in-flight, airports, and public places. Offering free WiFi and charging stations means gaining, or retaining customers.

@Jacob and Anandvy, i think solar cells and portable solar chargers (which are quite available already) may be a secret to longer better life or at least the problem of unexpectedly running out of power. These devices are getting more powerful and more useful every day.

@Prabhakar, i think travellers do invest in technology–and then there's the investment in replacing forgotten technology. Have you noticed the vending machines selling chargers, ipads and the like in airports? I have to think there's a market or they wouldn't sell the items at the airport. I know i've bought a forgotten computer cable at least once while on a trip. 🙂

@Susan, i agree. WiFi used to be a differentiator. the coffee house with Free Wifi put the sign in the window to bring in customers. Now it's a must have. Perhaps now wireless charging stations are the differentiator, but soon will become the standard. I wonder what is next.

@Himasnshupta: I think not just people buy the gadgets for themselves, this also seems to be the season of festivity and people like to gift things around to family and friends. This further pushes up the demand for gadgets and other appliances.

While the demand for electronic devices has gone up, the competition amongst players has also shot up, especially in the smartphones and tablets market. With so many players in the market, it is extremely difficult for even giants like Samsung and HTC to maintain their profitability. The costs are going down and so are the market prices.

    Anandvy,

As you know the weather nowadays is very-very unpredicatable globally.

We can't really look at past patterns and predict how the future is going to be accurately.

This is why Contingency Planning matters so much.

Weather Apps are great but when you are stuck in the Middle of a Snowed in Highway with No Food,No Water ;you realize the real value of Contingency planning.

Hailey, I think solar recharging options are much reliable than power banks.

Taimoor, gadgets are the best for gifting to someone and peoples would like accept such offers. I mean craze for more gadgets.

    Hailey,

Did I mention the wireless charging stations built in the old red phone booths in London? They also provide free WiFi so you can still do your online stuff while charging your device there. The only thing that I dislike is that instead of red they have painted them in green.

I can see why the change in color and in a way it makes sense. Yet, the red phone booths are so traditional in London that it's strange to think about them in green apple green. :/ I'll go to try one next time.

@Susan, i didn't know about that. How fun! If you are in the area, send a picture and we'll post it for everyone to see. I like it when new and old are mixed together. In terms of color, I wouldn't mind green, as long as it's a nice shade. 🙂
