The goal of all the solutions on display at APEX 2018, be they machines, software, processes, or materials is to improve the lives of manufacturers. That comes in several forms, from efficiency to speed, from traceability and compliance to first pass yield, and from financial performance to quality enhancements.
Using actionable data to improve quality was the topic of this debate with Cameron Shearon, owner of Shearon Consulting; Michael Ford, European marketing director at Aegis Software; and Dr. Bill Cardoso, president at Creative Electron. These three industry experts bring experience from consulting, from software development and deployment and for equipment manufacturing, as well as a wealth of experience from serving in the industry and interfacing with numerous manufacturers.
Everyone can agree that all starts with good data. There is no point in utilizing questionable data, so domain expertise is essential. Inspection machines need to produce the best image possible, thermal profilers need to record the right oven data, and test machines need to test the right test points.
Once this is a given, then using that data becomes key, converting inspection data to process improvements, feeding back to other machine in the line manually or automatically to make adjustment on the fly, create corrective action, and root out the cause of quality issues and assist in their correction.
