Crucial to the successful deployment of any Industry 4.0 or Smart Factory strategy are cyber physical systems. These provide the feedback and feedforward loops that allow machines to communicate in a meaningful way that drives process, quality, and performance improvements.
The building blocks for these cyber physical systems are in place. Machines can communicate with each other, some with their own protocols, but increasingly using industry accepted standards that are gaining momentum and adoption. Software at a machine level and beyond can take the derived data and use it to make meaningful adjustments to other processes. Electronics manufacturers have finally realized that success will come from a team effort and collaboration between those with deep domain expertize and those with systems level knowledge.
At Productronica, one of the largest electronic manufacturing events in the world, I gathered a panel of experts to look at the impact of cyber physical systems on manufacturing. Held earlier this month, in Munich, Germany, the show attracted more than 2,000 exhibiting companies and 55,000 visitors.
For this panel, I was lucky enough to create my own mini surface mount technology (SMT) line: Torsten Vegelahn, product manager at EKRA representing the screen printer; Harald Eppinger, general manager at Koh Young providing the Solder Paste Inspection; and Peter Barber, European service manager at Panasonic Factory Solutions representing placement. The panelists were not selected at random. These three companies are already working closely together delivering customer focused solutions that add value beyond the machine and process expertize. As a result, they are able to share experience and look forward to an even more collaborative future.
