Ever felt self-conscious or felt like everyone was watching you as you struggle to parallel park? You back in, don't quite get the turn right; pull out, try it again. And again. And again until you give up.
Well, with new parking-assist technology emerging, you may not ever feel those emotions again when parking. And you can thank IC vendors including Texas Instruments in Santa Clara, Calif., for that.
Sue Poniatowski, applications manager, shows Drive for Innovation Editor Brian Fuller how their technology can be used to not only make it easier to parallel park, but improve safety of the driver, pedestrians, and other cars on the road.
“Data will be captured from, say, four cameras that are strategically placed around the car. And the data is then combined within the processor, and used to create kind of a Birdseye image of the car and its environment,” Poniatowski said. This technology goes farther than just capturing video of a car's surroundings, but it also must process the data so that it can be used to make the driver more aware of their surroundings.
Poniatowski explains that:
Preserving the quality of the data, being able to stream the data, so that there's no loss, there's no compression becomes very important. Because now you want to process the data, take that information, and make decisions on it and give recommendations to the driver or even take over control from the driver.
