Organizations Aim for Operational Excellence

Increasingly, we live in a digital world. Organizations, then, are looking for ways to invest in systems and platforms that enhance their operational performance in ways that make them stand out from the crowd for their customers.  By choosing the right systems, organizations can enhance a variety of business goals, including on-time delivery, inventory turns, lead times, performance, budget, and quality, a new survey from Progressly found. 

The company, which makes a cloud-based operational performance management solution, surveyed over 500 global executives over eight weeks to find out how they are working to achieve key initiatives in operational excellence, and where the stumbling blocks are. Represented industries included energy (65%), as well as high tech, healthcare, retail, transportation, public sector, and manufacturing.

“The survey findings further validate that businesses are increasingly aligning their strategy with operational excellence to drive scalable, enterprise-wide transformation like never before,” said Progressly CEO and co-founder Nick Candito. “Operational excellence on the C-Suite agenda is now a mandatory requirement.”

Nine out of ten surveyed pointed to increased competitiveness as a primary goal behind exploring ways to improve operations. Nearly that number said that delivering customer value was the most difficult task in these efforts.

Almost 70% of those surveyed felt that the ease of working with the IT department needed to be increased. “Clearly organizations are seeking operational excellence and digital transformation – and getting IT aligned on business goals and driving excellence will be a key initiative to getting there,” Candito said. “It’s also important to have visibility of what’s going on across the whole business in real-time and then adapt as needed.”

For most organizations (83%), manufacturing was a natural area to use cloud infrastructure. Other popular areas included forecasting, planning, and scheduling (78%); purchasing, procurement, and sourcing (66%); logistics, transportation and warehousing (29%); inventory and materials management (19%); and customer service and collaboration (18%).

Of course, every organization is different, and doing everything at once is impossible. To succeed, a measured approach is critical. “Change doesn’t mean an overhaul of everything in one go, nor ripping and replacing existing software,” said Candito. “It’s much easier for organizations to first model and build flexibility and efficiency within their existing infrastructure.”
