MADISON, Wis. — The cause of the fatal crash of a Tesla using Autopilot last May is still being investigated both by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
But comments by Mobileye co-founder and CTO Amnon Shashua about Tesla during the company’s Q2 financial reporting this week illustrates not just the love lost between the two very proud technology companies, but what it would take for tech companies to pursue “safety” in the coming era of autonomous cars.
Neither Tesla alone — nor Mobileye alone — has a corner on leadership in autonomous driving. It takes a village, or genuine collaboration, to determine that the sum of each technology combined into a system — works safely. Whether the automotive industry is ready for it remains to be seen.
