The Why Behind IDEA-ICE-3000 Certification

Many people are unaware that any OEM, CM, or EMS provider can enroll its quality personnel in the IDEA-ICE-3000 Professional Inspector Certification Exam (IDEA-ICE-3000). This program, which is available now, can help your company secure the inspection expertise and detection solutions it needs.

In fact, a number of quality electronics companies lead the industry in IDEA-ICE-3000 certifications. IDEA-ICE-3000 was developed to provide the industry with a means to substantiate the capabilities that are essential to the visual inspection of product and its packaging for nonconforming and suspect counterfeit characteristics.

IDEA-ICE-3000 continues to garner industry recognition for providing a leading validated source for the demonstration of specialized inspection techniques, knowledge of industry best-practices and standards, and research skills necessary for the inspection of electronic components.

Why IDEA-ICE-3000 certification?

  • Increased confidence in the achievement of customer satisfaction.
  • It is a highly cost effective form of training and certification.
  • Higher levels of quality assurance and inspection competency.
  • Opportunity to learn robust identification and prevention techniques.
  • Chance to stay on top of trend developments in counterfeit components.
  • Possibility to reduce liability insurance costs by better protecting the supply chain.
  • Satisfies requirements for continuing education.

IDEA-ICE-3000's rigorous curriculum is based on IDEA-STD-1010: Acceptability of Electronic Components Distributed in the Open Market , industry standards, and best-practices relevant to the open market. The program challenges the candidate in practical inspection knowledge as well as the access and usage of relevant reference materials in the workplace.

IDEA just released its newest version of IDEA-ICE-3000 that it is now available to all candidates eligible for certification. The new revision was created and formatted for optimal user experience and interaction and includes over four times the total available question content than the previous version. The exam program is accessed through a secure online interface that offers each candidate a convenient, efficient, and unique testing environment.

In summary, IDEA-ICE-3000 provides an easily accessible program for inspection certification that will benefit your company's first line of defense against counterfeit and nonconforming product. Enrollment is simple — click here for more information.

Do you need so much of Quality and Certifications? This looks pretty redundant and add to cost without much tangible gain. I am dissapointed.

Thanks for the clarification that a variety of organizations are able to partake of this. With counterfeit components being such a problem in the electronics industry, having well trained in house folks who have been trained in spotting problems will certainly be helpful.

I am aware of some suppliers that have the IDEA ICE-3000 certification. They are pretty impressive with the depth of their knowledge in relation to suspect counterfeit and good components.

We have to have such a channel where we can trust companies to protect us. We just don't have the expertise. We certainly try to avoid the “open Market” if we can, but often there is no choice.

At least there is a way to learn what to look out for. I suspect it will be a good thing for us to adopt as a skill, but still rely on companies with better skills at filtering out the chaffe.

_hm, am not getting, why you got disappointed by taking this certification? Certifications are always good to hold up your credentials, and in certain cases it worth more than on the job experience.

@Datooyuts, thanks for weighing in with some real world experience. Do you have any idea how that expertise translates into business benefit? Do the number of counterfeit components that slip through decrease measurably? I'd love to hear stories if you or any other readers have measured that.

@_hm, Thanks for your feedback. While I can appreciate your comments around there being “too much quality/too many certifications/redundant certifications,” please note that our members supply parts that go into Aerospace, Medical, and Military. Having said this, there truly is no limit when it comes to OEM/CM/EMS customers who support life and human safety. At less than $400 per inspector per year, it is a low cost/high value option that many decision makers agree with. Despite the relatively low cost, there is no dollar amount that justifies avoiding a certification that helps companies reduce the risk of potential catastrophic loss.

@Hailey, Yes, it would indeed help. The program serves to assist all industry stakeholders to attain more secure and responsible procurement solutions, particularly when engaging in the open market. If additional organizations added this training for their inspectors, it would further bolster the industry's efforts to combat the proliferation of counterfeit and nonconforming electronic components.

@Datooyuts, Thank you for your positive assessment of the program and the suppliers you have encountered that have IDEA-ICE-3000 certified inspectors. Many, if not all, of the suppliers that have obtained this training and certification are highly competent independent distribution organizations that have dedicated their operations to advanced quality initiatives. This provides them with the expertise and knowledge to responsibly navigate the open market for their customers and to significantly reduce any perceived risk associated with the necessary transaction. And many transactions in the open market are indeed necessary – as you have noted, there is often no choice and its use is unavoidable. These quality organizations offer a responsible and stable partnership within the independent distribution channel that complements the electronics supply chain by offering a trusted solution for open market procurement. While IDEA Members lead the efforts of counterfeit mitigation and detection within the independent distribution industry, we strongly believe that other eligible organizations will benefit from this training and certification to fortify their own inspection processes and contribute to the security of the supply chain, thus adding yet another layer of scrutiny and detection of suspect product.

@Lia: I have spent nearly two decades working in space payload electronics and developing military hardware. And I like very high, 0.9999999 reliable quality product.

But I do not agree adding one more certification is a answer. When you actually work on product development and work under unusually high pressure for survival, there are so many other factors affecting quality of the product. We need to consult engineers/technicians who does actual work and ask them what they need to further enhance product quality. To my experience, certification may be in last few. Peiople need so many other tools and they are more appropriate to further quality of proudcts.

Hm, I think you are wrong. Certification is the process, where you are registering your skills, testing and finally acknowledge it by a certifying authority through a certification. That matters value in job market rather than saying 'n' years of experience.
