Amsterdam, the capital of The Netherlands, was founded on October 27, 1275. The city is picturesque, especially at the quiet hours in the morning, right before heading to the conference's venue. The city is divided into approximately 90 islands, which are linked by more than 1200 bridges, and surrounded by one hundred Kilometers of an elaborated canal system. Another characteristic of the city are its 400 kilometers of cycle paths. 1M bicycles were already populating the streets in Amsterdam by 2006. There are more bikes than people, and four times the number of cars.
